In retrospect, they should have assumed something like this could happen. James will blame himself later on, insisting he should have known that there was a chance this could be a consequence of their involvement in ending Silas’ schemes.
(Sherlock will, of course, tell him it’s not his fault, even as he grimaces in pain while doing so.)

Sherlock did as he was told. There was something bitter to it, so unlike the drinks he and his mother had prepared earlier, but then again he wasn't sure he could trust his mind. His memories.
And if he couldn't trust those, where did that leave him?
"You have a brilliant mind. I always said that," his father said, as if he had heard his thoughts. "But there's a cost to brilliance."
