“You did not leave me?” Nicolo said.
“What?” Yusuf’s head snapped up, taking a good look at Nicolo for the first time this morning. Whatever he saw made him rush over.
“Nicolo, what’s wrong?” he said. “You’re crying. Why would you think such a thing?”
“You said—” Nicolo started and every word was like gravel. He would suffer a thousand more deaths before he wished more of this pain upon himself. “You said we would part when we came to the sea.”
He waved a hand at the open balcony and the seagulls beyond, the glittering pearl that was the Mediterranean, how it would carry him to the festering forested heartbreak of Europe in a matter of a few short weeks.
“There it is.”

Summary
The first time, they do not kiss.
Yusuf does not know if a man like Nicolò even wants to be kissed. He understands the moonlight-pale stares from across the fire, understands the hesitant touch on the inside of his thigh that sparked this, but still, they do not kiss.
It’s been six years since they’ve met, a year since they’ve last tried killing each other, and Yusuf refuses to wait any longer.

Yusuf realises that he is in love in the mountains.
It is colder than he is used to. Niccolò does not seem to mind, although he sometimes shivers in his (stolen) clothes like a drowned rat.
For the four years - or is it six? ten? he cannot tell and he does not care how long it is, so long as Niccolò is by his side - that they have been travelling, most of his contemplative thoughts have fallen into one of two categories. The first is their Affliction and everything that goes with it.
