Summary
At the end of the Dominion war, Julian leaves for Cardassia with Garak. They will have to build their relationship while facing the hardships of a war-devastated planet.
This story is a sequel to "what we are meant to be" and starts a few hours after its ending. You don't need to read the prequel to understand this fiction but it is probably helpful. Anyway, the prequel was canon-compliant until the end of season 7.

Summary
When his long-time friend Dr Julian Bashir is caught in a building collapse, while working with the Federation relief Corps, Councillor Elim Garak is beside himself with worry. When it becomes apparent Bashir will not be recovering quickly or easily, Garak is baffled by Bashir's unwillingness to return to Federation space to recuperate. With the Cardassian medical system already buckling under strain and no other options, Garak is the obvious choice to help care of Bashir as he heals.

Summary
In order to stay on Cardassia and continue to rebuild their dilapidated healthcare system Julian agrees to marry Garak. It's a marriage only for legal rights since both assume the other isn't interested.
Suddenly, they are given Ra'Nul, a legal tradition that gives married same sex couples ophrans to raise as their own. Julian didn't know it could happen. Garak assumed it wouldn't.
Baby trapped by the state, they are forced to stay in a relationship and start a family with a man they believe doesn't return their feelings.

Summary
With everyone on the Defiant fighting for their lives following the withdrawal from the station, Doctor Julian Bashir picks a strange time to suddenly realize, apropos of nothing, that he is head-over-heels in love with Garak.
With diminishing odds, it'll be an uphill battle to make sure that either of them live long enough for Julian to tell Garak the truth.
