“Yes. As in exactly that.” Hayden says, probably a lot stressed because Troy can almost hear him pacing from the other line. “Do you know where the fuck Shane is?”
Troy is obligated to bring his phone screen into his field of vision one more time just to make sure this is not some bizarre alcohol-induced hallucination.
“What?” He asks, his voice sharpening, “Why on earth would I know where your captain is?”
“Shit.” He says, “I meant Ilya.”

Summary
“Is she alright?” Shane asks, voice tight.
“We don’t know yet,” Hayden says, and now he sounds exhausted more than frantic. “She’s been colicky all night. Jackie and I decided to take her to the emergency room. But listen—Shane, can you watch Jade, Ruby, and Arthur? Just for tonight? I’d ask our parents, but my mom’s recovering from surgery and Jackie’s parents are on vacation. I don’t burden them.”
“Of course,” Shane says almost immediately and Ilya’s chest swells with pride. He picked such a nice person like Shane, who is always ready to help. When Shane looks to Ilya for confirmation that it is okay, Ilya is already nodding. “When do you think you’ll be here by?”
“Jackie and I are strapping the kids into the car now. Should be there in thirty minutes.” Hayden answers and Ilya hears the decisive thud of a car door.
OR
When Amber comes down with a fever, Hayden calls Shane and Ilya and asks if they can watch the rest of his kids during the one weekend they have off that season.

“I thought Ilya was, like, the man here,” Hayden motioned. Something suspiciously sounding like Jackie’s voice in the back of his brain told him that wasn’t the right wording, but he was too tired and already too buzzed to care. Besides, this was Shane, he didn’t need to say the perfect thing. Shane knew what he meant.
Scott shifted. “They are both men, Hayden” he said very formally. Hayden suddenly felt like his dad was lecturing him.
Hayden sighed. “No, Shane, you know what I mean.”
Shane’s brow furrowed in concentration. “Like, because I bottom?” He said, slightly embarrassed.
Scott’s steady gaze on Hayden suddenly turned very sharp.
“No!” Hayden started. “Well, maybe? I don’t know how that works. I just mean, like, you’re real gay and Ilya likes women, right?”
OR 5 times Hayden realizes other people know his best friend better than him, and the 1 time Shane tells him himself.
