“No, don’t be stupid, Alcryst. Diamant is not going to die.”
He repeated those words in his head over and over as he looked around every tree and rock to see if Diamant was passed out there, and down any ditches to ensure he hadn’t fallen down and broken a leg or an ankle. The main army was now also searching, and with the fliers scanning from above, Alcryst knew he would turn up eventually. And yet, as the minutes ticked by and there was still so sign of him, Alcryst began to fear the worst. He sank to his knees, and buried his head in his hands. He hated this stupid, stupid valley! It was where he was fighting for his life after losing his father, and now it had taken his older brother from him. He wasn’t ready to inherit the Brodian throne. His whole life had been spent in Diamant’s shadow, and he wasn’t ready to step out into the limelight and claim the throne.
