Summary
He’s not stupid. It took him some time — years — but Eddie’s half certain that, should his patience snap one day, should he lean in across the way one night when it’s just the two of them, should he palm at Buck’s jaw to bring his face closer and kiss him on the mouth, Buck would kiss him back. That’s not the problem.
The problem is that Eddie’s gonna ruin it.
He’s ruined every other romantic relationship in his life. If it happens with Buck, Eddie knows neither of them will come back from it.
These days, he’s content with having Buck the way he does now. He may succumb to weakness, sometimes, like he just did in the kitchen, holding Buck like that, but Eddie’s willpower is the stuff of legend. He’s happy with his place in Buck’s life. He can play the part of codependent best friend, dad who stepped up, platonic soulmate.
The main issue here, really, hindsight twenty-twenty and all, is that Eddie really misses being a husband.
or: five times eddie, willing and knowing, acts like buck's husband, and one time he. well. you can guess where this is going.

Summary
“Where are you driving from?” Eddie asked, his mouth moving before he could stop it, his brain deciding that awkward small talk was infinitely safer than just standing there vibrating with nervous energy.
“East,” the guy replied with a casual, fluid roll of his broad shoulders. “Farther than I wanted to be, honestly. And definitely longer than I originally planned.”
Before the army, before Los Angeles, and long before the 118, there was a dusty gas station on the edge of El Paso, a broken-down Jeep with Pennsylvania plates, and a stranger named Evan.
For years, they were each other's entire world, surviving basic training, AIT, and a grueling deployment side-by-side. But a devastating wave of silence and a massive misunderstanding tore them apart, leaving behind a deep, soul-cutting ache and a history neither of them ever truly moved on from.
Now, the past has finally caught up to the present. Standing under the harsh fluorescent lights of Station 118, Eddie and Evan are forced to navigate the wreckage of the life they left behind—and the terrifying truth of everything they never stopped running from.

Summary
There's an insistent tapping on Buck's face, and Buck's eyes drift open back up towards-
"Eddie," he says, maybe slurring through his name. It doesn't feel right, as if the words are buffering somewhere between his brain and mouth.
"Eyes on me," Eddie says, except it splits somewhere down the middle.
He has a determined look on his face, the one he wears when he's trying to make sense of a bad call, mouth set and ticked down at the corner. Buck knows that look as surely as he knows how to breathe, the same way his heart knows how to beat. Eddie is gravity, the pull at the center of Buck's world, and even now, when Buck can't find his footing, he can't help but be drawn toward him.
Behind Eddie's eyes, Buck sees fear.
-
On the way to a routine call, the 118 engine is involved in a major lateral impact collision. It's confronting for Buck and Eddie, in more ways than one.

Summary
“His shirt’s on inside out,” Josh commented to Linda. Eddie opened the door to the breakroom and tried to let it close behind him, but that did not deter either of his colleagues. “Is this a walk of shame?”
“Well, I am walking,” Eddie confirmed, rounding the counter and beelining to the empty coffee pot. “And full of shame.”
“What happened?”
“I stood him up,” he answered, shortly.
After what was probably a very involved silent conversation between Linda and Josh, Josh said, “Eddie, if you aren’t ready, I’m sure he’d understand.”
“I am ready,” he said, detaching the water reservoir with more force than necessary. “I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Summary
Eddie feels a little bit like he’s stuck in limbo. He has Buck — except for the couple of hours a week Buck spends with the person who really has him. He has Chris — but only in the once-a-week phone calls and secondhand text messages.
He doesn’t believe in fate. But if he did, Eddie would wonder if it was too much to ask of the universe that he get to have his family be fully his — all the time, and all the way.
Things fall apart when Chris leaves for Texas. They fall apart some more before they can be put back together.
