Shadow wants to interrupt him, wants to kick him off the bed and watch him collapse in a blue heap on the floor, then push himself onto his hands and knees and blink up at Shadow with eyes that shock from bleary to embarrassed to angry. He wants to fight, to slam Sonic’s head into the floorboards, the bed frame, bust his skull open on the corner of the nightstand. He wants bared teeth and searing pain, he wants violence, wreckage, normalcy. Sonic dreams and Shadow wants to interrupt him, but then there’s another thought, dark and sinful and twisting up through his brainstem: he wants to push Sonic down further, press him deeper into whatever turbid place he’s in now, hurt him for seeking pleasure so brazenly and for daring to involve Shadow in his filth. Two opposite impulses, equal in gravitational pull and each a form of the other: Shadow wants to hold Sonic’s head underwater and watch him drown.
So he traps the tip of his glove beneath the point of a fang and he pulls it off silently, but Sonic looks peaceful, open and almost ethereal, silverblue under the spill of the broken milkbowl moon, and when Shadow touches him, he’s far less cruel than he’d expected himself to be.

A story that is perfectly crafted, elevated, and aged like old money’s finest charcuterie that you find yourself sloughing down like $7 pickleback shots as if you only have 1 night in NYC and you’ve lost any semblance of self control.
A guilty read in the fact you’ll slide through it and wish you spent more time ogling the oozing, fantastic, literarily intimate prose that is every. Single. Fucking. Sentence. A true force mejur of vocabulary.
Van Gogh and Earnest Hemingway wish they had this author’s brain or talent.
FURTHERMORE a masterclass in adapting modern characterizations to bonafide genre fiction. Sheriff Sonic I did not see you coming, but my goodness did IncrediblyOrdinary sell you.
I simply cannot wait patiently enough to see where the rest of this goes.
A must read, for Sonadow fans.

When he opened his eyes, Shadow was on top of him, pinning his arms and legs and breathing hard. He’d caged him in and taken the full brunt of the fallout – effectively cocooning them in a mess of steel bars and dusty inventory – but he barely looked ruffled. Sonic stared up at him – his eyes, the flush to his cheeks, the little hint of fang he could see as Shadow panted – and a thrill shot down his spine to pool in his hips. He tried to move his arm but Shadow’s grip just tightened.
“Caught you,” Shadow said, low and breathless.

In all his time careening through shatterspaces, Sonic had never met another Shadow.
Until now.
