Assistant detective (or rather, “assistant to detectives”) Makoto Naegi is 22 and working for his friend as an assistant to her detective office while saving up for college and figuring out what he wants to do with the rest of his life. After a client with a strange request comes by, Makoto finds himself in way over his head.
Hajime Hinata, an unassuming and perfectly regular young man, has had strange dreams and thoughts that don't feel like his own leading him to someplace called “Jabberwock Island”. Determined to discover why he feels such a pull there and unwilling to put off the trip, he hires “detective” Naegi to help him investigate and keep him safe (although he has doubts about the latter).
