Summary
The truth is that, after being on the verge of death so many times, facing evil creatures taken out straight from your worst nightmares, you tend not to care so much about the same kind of evil in people; not about the all-consuming darkness of their soul trying to dig its claws into your heart, nor the freezing cold atmosphere surrounding them, your instinct telling you to bolt, to just get out, or you’ll maybe never get the chance to ever again. You tend to look the other way as they keep roaming the earth, the venom of their heart proliferating and poisoning your body, your mind, slowly, viciously spreading to everything that ever mattered to you; because you know you survived other kinds of monsters that openly tried to kill you. Because staying alive was the priority, still is, and you know there’s always something worse, something bigger, lurking out in the darkness and ready to swoop down on you and the ones you love.
When facing such horrors, you tend to forget that other kinds of monsters exist.
Max never got the luxury to forget.

Summary
Steve couldn’t say why he still believed in happy endings; in everything going alright, in the end. He must be pretty naïve, or fucking stupid (that sounded more like it), seeing how many times he had been proved wrong in the last years. That’s why he probably should have guessed that things would go amiss. Because it always does.
Hastily stuffing his only source of both light and fire back into the pocket of Eddie’s vest and hoping it’d be enough to keep him alive until he found something better, he couldn’t help but think back to what the brunet had said few hours earlier, the memory of Dustin jumping up and down excitedly warming his heart and forcing him to run faster; a smirk forming on his lips as he made his way back into the woods surrounding the trailer park, words being carried away by the wind as he heard the beat of the bats' wings already chasing him.

The Oracles, that’s what they were called; the people supposed to save the world. Pure bullshit.
An excuse to transform helpless children into military dogs.
Nothing more.
He was about to help them up when he heard the rattling of the chains; and thus at that moment understood two things: first, that the wall they had put up had been, already, a way to prioritize Tony’s survival, because cutting through magical chains was almost impossible without the right artefact or amount of power, and they knew it; and second, that the Oracle had, indeed, contained the spread -more than probably willingly at first- but that at some point they had been forced to, and chained up with a bounding spell to the fortress; exposed like a trophy and used as a personal shield.
He never hated humankind more than at this moment.
For what felt like hours, his eyes followed, horrified and disgusted, the chains he hadn’t previously noticed from the floor up to the Oracle’s feet, waist, neck and arms, like claws preventing him from escaping, encaging his weakened body as if he was an animal.

Summary
Dabi was Shouto's responsibility, had always been, would always be. Since the very first time their eyes met, he had accepted it.
Shouto had killed Touya, and had kept the ambers under the ashes of his body subdued enough for him only to bear, yet never managed to let them be put out forever. He had kept them close to his heart, in foolish hope that one day he would come back home; never realising Shouto himself was the sole reason why their house was already nothing more than rotten wood engulfed in hellflames and returning to dust.
Touya was the world's way of holding him accountable.
Shouto wouldn't fail his brother, not this time.He did dig up two graves for them after all, didn't he?

There’s blood under his fingernails.
It shouldn't bother him as much as it does. It never did before. Maybe was it because he had lost so much of it throughout the years, maybe was it because he sometimes felt the need to bring it out of his body himself, like you would remove polluted air from your lungs with a few careful breaths; hoping it’d be enough for you to feel alright again, secretly praying it would have been strong enough to take the impurity out of your alveoli darkened by second-hand smoke and fire you never asked for.
But today, there's blood under his fingernails, once again.
The kind of blood that neither the weeping rain nor his pouring tears can seem to wash away.
