Summary
I am, as Holmes would no doubt point out, telling the story backward. But when one day I walked into the sitting room and found him admiring a particularly garish ring on his left ring-finger, which he explained was payment from a client with a surfeit of gold but a deficit in taste, I knew not only that I wanted to see him wearing my ring on his finger, but that I had wanted that for a very long time and had only in that instant recognised the fact.
