His gratitude, however, didn’t steal away the pang of disappointment that worked through him finding himself alone. Tina had been on his mind since the moment she’d left. Even spending lengthy afternoons in his case with all his creatures could not hamper how much he missed her. Newt longed to see Tina, and finding her not at home was more than disheartening.

Strange it was that a scenario so frightful as being sent to death was also one Tina could not bear the thought of surrendering, out of fear of forgetting the initial feeling of being in his arms.

It was all Newt could do not to wrangle himself free of Theseus’ grip and run back to Tina, hoping she didn’t loathe him for abandoning her.

His shoulders relax when she produces no recriminations, touching his waistcoat pocket to feel Pickett stir curiously beneath his fingers. “I can only stay three days. I—I think that will be long enough.”

He blends seamlessly into the background cacophony of New York at dawn, yet this doesn’t make the separation any easier—and Tina can no longer blame subway dust for the tears in her eyes. She hesitates a moment longer, allowing them all one final look, before clasping Newt and her sister and Disapparating them home.
Or: According to the screenplay, Newt didn't leave New York until a full week after the events of the film. This is the story of what happened in that time.
