“For the record, I totally didn’t send this,” Jason declares, resting his fists judgmentally on his hips and wrinkling the bridge of his nose as he takes in the envelope’s exterior details. “I wouldn’t embarrass myself by printing the address for Wayne Manor in Comic Sans. And I definitely wouldn’t use whatever fresh hell that return address is printed in.”
Taking the bagged envelope in hand again, Bruce moves to the Batcomputer and pulls up the folder of fonts on the system. He glances between the envelope and the sample screen for the font he’d already suspected would be a match.
But clocking the font name gives him a great deal of pause. “Jokerman,” he finally declares in a growl through clenched teeth.
Tim, as it turns out, may not be Jack Drake’s son, but Bruce Wayne’s already got kids he picked out personally. That’s okay though, because Tim’s got a plan for how to deal with this revelation—it’s not like he needs acknowledgement from a second father that doesn’t want him, anyway.

Summary
"Hi, Clark," he swallowed, smiling, even though he was aware that his heartbeat was betraying his anxiety. There was no worse person he could meet first. It would have been better to find Bruce in the cave, perhaps while he was still working on a case, irritated and tired. Even Alfred would have been better. Alfred might have understood.
But Clark - and God, how strange to think that he was practically living in Gotham now, now that things between him and Bruce were official - was not the type to offer him any loopholes.
“Uhm…so…have you received my message? You know, the one in which..."
“The one where you announced your return without specifying whether you would come to Gotham or talk about Bruce?" Clark ended up for him, with the tone carefully neutral, as well as his face, a mask of neutrality that didn't help him understand what was going through his mind,"Yes, Richard. We received it."
No it's good to see you, Dick, or Are you hungry? Alfred just made pancakes.
Clark was pissed.
(Dick returns to the Manor after yet another violent quarrel with Bruce, ready to return to things as usual. But after a year, Clark won't make it easy for him.)

He has to know that’s not all. But he’s asking anyway, to get as much information as possible out of the villain before they’re left to their own devices. It’s what they’ve all been trained to do.
Tim squeezes his eyes shut, knowing what Joker is going to say. Knowing exactly what the evil madman is planning to do.
Damn it. Damn it all to hell, not here, not now. Not like this.

Tim's long done with the report, but he keeps putting off leaving. He isn't sure what he's waiting for. His fingers haven't moved in a long time, and his mind stutters and glitches oddly, tripping over capitalism and greed and chocolate cupcakes and cheeks eaten away by fish in the harbor.
Finally, near sunrise, Bruce turns toward him, and everything goes still and silent, like something buried in the tender place beneath Tim's rib cage is holding its breath.

Tim's wrapped up in one now, his brother's arms all the way around his shoulders, tugging him in close.
He's never told Dick that the first hug he can remember is that day at the circus, from a stranger who would in time be family. He's never told Dick that the next hug he remembers after that is nine years later, caught up in those same strong arms. He thinks he'd rather die than admit it.
"You're not hurt?" Dick is saying. "Nothing cruel and unusual, right?"
"She only let me have one cup of coffee a day," says Tim, very dry, and Dick makes a strange sort of a sound, almost a laugh, and tightens his hold so much it sweeps Tim right off his feet.

"Think he's trying to lure you in," says Tim, with a huff of a laugh. "Like one of those traps they bait for raccoons."
"Raccoons are too smart for that, baby bird," says Dick, blithely, and swipes up one of the bait-cookies anyway, biting into it with an appreciative little hum.
Tim finds somewhere else to look — fixes his gaze on a spot on the far wall, trying hard to ignore the way the kitchen smells of cinnamon and nutmeg and sugar. His stomach twists a little, hopeful, and he tells it firmly that these aren't for him. They're Dick's welcome-home cookies.

It's a hallucination, like all the rest. Objectively, Tim understands that.
But he feels the words like an icepick in his chest all the same, and a part of him knows. This version of Dick might not be real, these words might not be real, but what he's saying is true anyway.
"Are you fucking listening to me?" says the man in the red helmet. "The big bad bat's not coming to save you." There's a crash, and when Tim turns toward it, his desk's been overturned. His laptop is lying on the floor in a tangle of cords. If any of this were actually happening, Tim might be afraid that it was broken.

He spots the robin on a tree branch maybe thirty feet away, and Tim, grinning, goes to adjust the settings on the binoculars.
It's exactly then that he realizes what's behind the bird.
Because from here, on the third story and at just this angle, there's no treeline to block his view. Behind the little robin singing on its branch, he can see the Wayne family manor, clear as anything, close enough that it almost feels like he could reach out and touch it. One of the windows on the downstairs floor is open, and it's draped with light curtains that float softly in the breeze. A moment later, a different sort of Robin bounds into view, sans mask, grin wide and bright.
Tim flinches back as though burned.
