Yelena can tell, too. "As good as he was in the Void?" she asks.
"That wasn't him." Bucky shakes his head and looks down at the sandwich clenched in his metal hand. He had nightmares again for weeks after that. "Steve was... he was my best friend. He was my family."
Yelena closes one eye and squints at him. “Family like the wife or family like the brother?”
Bucky makes a face and shoves her so hard she cackles and drops the pickle slice she was about to put in her mouth.

Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like they’re running.
They’ll walk side by side or Kili will lead for Fili to follow, his stronger boots more suited to route-finding than Fili’s. The stories don’t stop even then, Kili turning to smile back over his shoulder and making Fili’s chest ache with something that he doesn’t know the name for.
They take bearings and frown at the map with their heads crowded together, and there are moments that Fili wonders if it could always be this way, if they could just keep on putting one foot in front of the other and walking and walking through the nights and the winter and the war; because with Kili rubbing sleep from his eyes with his fist, leaving his stories woven in the forests behind them like a breadcrumb trail, dragging the heavy coat across their exhausted bodies as they press together to keep warm through the breaking dawn, it feels like the simplest thing in the world, and Fili isn’t sure that he wants anything more.
