After the gang fell apart, Charles and Arthur managed to find each other and wandered aimless for years until John found them and offered them a place at Beecher's Hope. There, Arthur suffered from another bout of TB, one that left him frail and sickly. Charles, having nursed him through both bouts, wants nothing more than for Arthur to rest up and get better, but Arthur is desperate to return to normal, even if it means fighting tooth and nail.

“But I—” I need you, he almost says. “I thought you was taking me with you.”
Charles looks at him so fondly. “I can’t—"
