    Bookmarker's Notes

“Imagine being so into somebody that you write a whole book dedicated to them, knowing it isn’t going to do any good at all. I mean, it’s beautiful, the poems about Maizono and the rose- and then he cuts the whole rosebush down at the end because she’s not coming back.”

“Do you think she was ever there? Or was he just hallucinating?” Komaeda challenges.

    Hajime laughs a little. “I don’t know, I’m not really a literary type, but…”

    “But?”

“I don’t think it matters? If you love someone enough to change like that, does it matter if it’s real? Or if it’s returned?”

“A big fan of unrequited love, then.”

    “Fan isn’t really how I’d…”

They just started laughing really hard, the hardest she had ever seen them laugh. As she stared at them laughing in the water, smiling wide, a single thought had entered her head.

    “Oh.”

    And the rest was history.

    ...

She continued her jog towards Kris’s house, but they didn't move.

Kris stood there, face extremely warm, as a single thought entered their head

    “Oh.”

    Summary

Tenna could hear the kitchen. The clatter of plates. The deep rumble of Asgore’s voice, rising—then flattening into something hoarse. Toriel’s sharper. Less like a yell, more like a scab picked sore too many times. Kris would wander in, shoulders stiff, and press their cheek to the static. Sometimes, if the TV was warm from recent use, the glass would fog. They’d breathe slow. Not watching anything. Just being close.

He’d glow soft blue beneath them. He always kept his volume low. Just enough to give them something steady. He thought of himself, in those times, as a nightlight. Something for a scared kid to feel near when they didn’t want to cry.

And then, sometimes, Kris would draw.

Little stick figures with marker right on the screen. Green for themselves. Brown for Noelle. Big loopy lines for antlers. Red for Dess. a big triangle with gashing spikes . Toriel would scold them gently when she caught them, but she never got angry. She’d say, “Markers are for paper,” and Kris would shrug and say “Okay,” and do it again next week.

He wanted to tell them: I see you. I see everything.

The way they checked the front window when the mail came.

The way they lingered in doorways like they weren’t sure they were allowed in.

The way they looked smaller when Susie wasn’t around.

Kris didn’t talk to him anymore.

But he watched them the way someone watches the sun set behind a window. The light changing in such slow, soft increments it hurt to think about.

(You fear what is to come. A selfish part of you shares her wish. No tomorrows. Just today. Just the two of you being able to spend time together, act like you were just normal teens. Skipping rocks by the lake. Chugging juice together. Shared meals in the diner, playing piano side by side, your hands slipping over hers. You’ve been alone in the dark for so long you forgot how just how nice it felt to step into the light.)

Aventurine swallows. Ratio can name every muscle that moves in the motion, but none of it matters in the quiet heat of the moment compared to the way it makes him feel.

“You shouldn't trust me,” he says. “I look at you, and I–”

He does not finish his sentence. It is not right to say that the way he wants Aventurine is impure, for desire is desire is desire, but there isn't another word that expresses the way he wants to feel every inch of his, painfully human, body. Ratio presses another kiss to his jaw because he feels as if he might die if he doesn't.

“Ratio,” Aventurine says, almost laughing. He curls a hand around his jaw and tilts his face to see the fond expression on his. “I told you I trusted you, didn't I?”

Aventurine's hand curls around his neck, his fingers resting in the perfect position to feel his racing pulse. They are, he thinks, both lonely, both hungry, both as cold towards other people as they are wanting to be loved by them.
