Summary
Only with the Avatar State could Aang ever stand a chance at being able to defeat Fire Lord Ozai without killing him. But to unlock the Avatar State, he'd have to overcome his attachment to Katara.
Unable or unwilling to let go of Katara, he makes his choice.
After holding her best friend's life in her hands and watching it nearly slip through her fingers, Katara finds herself glued to Zuko's side, and cares for him diligently in the days following the Agni Kai, waiting to hear word on the fate of their friends in the Earth Kingdom and what has become of the Fire Lord.
Meanwhile Aang, Sokka, Suki, and Toph deal with the immediate aftermath of the Fire Lord's death and wait to hear word of Katara and Zuko from the Fire Nation.
Upon reunion, tensions that have been building for months following the group's arrival on Ember Island come to a boiling point, abruptly threatening to tear Team Avatar apart following the end of the Hundred Year War as Katara's motherly love towards Aang clashes with her and Zuko's newly budding love for each other, and Aang's unhealthy obsession with Katara has him on the verge of burning bridges he can't rebuild.

A shuffle of feet. Lockwood’s standing right behind her. She can feel the warmth of him shiver all along her back, the nape of her neck.
She’s about to turn to face him when suddenly that warmth connects: Lockwood’s arms fold carefully around her, his body draping overtop of hers like he suddenly can’t stand. Lucy stiffens. His chin touches the side of her head, then his jaw, his mouth, as he curls in over her back, tucks his head down into her shoulder. Their cheeks press together. Something warm and heavy settles on the top of her head, and she realizes he’s pulled the blanket up over both of their heads like a shelter.
Like a cape.
“Sorry, Lucy,” he whispers in her ear. “Just bear it for a second. Please.”

As the last rays of sun disappeared below the horizon, two dark spots appeared, hovering just to the side of the bed. Shades. Without taking his eyes off the spirits, Lockwood’s hands went into his coat pockets. He pulled out a stick of gum, long fingers unwrapping it like a present before popping it in his mouth. Then, he fished another silver rectangle from his pocket and silently held it out in the space between us. I muttered a quick thanks, unwrapped the stick of gum, popped the minty softness into my mouth, and let saliva pool on my tongue before I shifted it between my teeth, chewing perhaps harder than necessary to distract myself from the echoes of the couple’s final moments that drifted through the room like a cold winter wind.
“Right. Well, let’s get going. We’ve got a murderous Type Two somewhere and at least two Type Ones in this room.” He smiled at me, but I saw something odd in the creases by his eyes–a rare tension. “With you, Luce, it’ll be done in a jiff.”

Because she doesn’t. Because sleeping means dreaming and Lockwood knows exactly what dreaming entails right now. And then there’s the cold, which still hasn’t retreated, even with the cape and the tea and Lockwood’s arm pressed in a warm line along her own while they drank it.
He doesn’t answer, just takes her by the hand and leads her from the kitchen, flicking off the lights as they go. And she lets him, because she’s tired and aching, and because it’s Lockwood doing it.
(or, recovering from walking in the land of the dead isn't easy, but lockwood and lucy are giving it their best shot.)

It all feels achingly familiar and he can’t for the life of him work out why until Lucy sleepily scrawls another note, frowning when the ink runs dry, touching the nib of the pen to her tongue, and he’s suddenly reminded so violently of his mother that it hurts, a dull ache flaring beneath his ribs.
How many times as a kid had he snuck down the many flights of stairs from his little attic haven for a glass of water in the middle of the night to find his parents in this very scene?
Because that is where his mother used to sit and this is where his father used to sit, a pot of tea going cold on the table between them as they worked into the early hours of the morning, absorbed in their research.
