Summary
Friends were for the weak. They only ever held you back, and were exploited by your enemies.
That’s what Sakura liked to tell himself–convince himself. In reality, he never understood it. He didn’t understand why having friends was so great. Why did he need someone to eat out? He could do that easily by himself. Why have someone bring him things when he is sick? He can just as easily go to the store himself. Why have someone to fight alongside? They would only get in his way.

“That came out nice, don’tcha think Hiragi?” Umemiya was holding something small and rectangular in his hand, waving it around rapidly before shoving it in Hiraigi’s face. He didn’t wait for an answer, “I think it’s very nice. Our Sakura is so photogenic.”
Equal parts embarrassment and shame pooled in Sakura’s chest, his face heating up on reflex. He was the opposite of photogenic, but Umemiya’s grin only widened.
“Here.” Umemiya offered him the rectangle, holding up a placating hand just as Sakura was about to shout. “It’ll help you understand how we see you.”

“Hey, Cassie,” Conner said cheerfully—too cheerfully—before casually slipping an arm around Tim’s shoulders. Like Tim was his designated human shield. Or emotional support nerd.
Tim stiffened, then forced himself not to. Conner was warm. Very warm. Distractingly warm.
Cassie’s blue eyes laser-focused on Conner. “What happened to studying?”
The glare she leveled at him could have melted steel.
Conner’s grin broadened like he’d just been handed a get-out-of-jail-free card. “Well, my new friend here—”
“Tim,” Tim supplied, because apparently he was now part of the alibi.
“Tim,” Conner echoed, his smile never dipping for even a second. “Said he would help me with it. ‘Cause I was struggling with some terms.”
