“I don’t think you understand how much you mean to me. I don’t think you do,” he chokes out between painfully brief inhales and choked out exhales. “And that’s my fault. I know it is.” His vision blurs terribly, chest drawing painfully tighter as Will scrambles to sit up and move closer to Mike’s trembling form.
“Mike…Mike, it’s okay. It’s okay, alright? You need to breathe.” His eyes are frantic as he looks Mike over. His hands hover like he wants to reach out and touch. Mike’s never wanted something so bad in his life but it’s the last thing he deserves.
“It’s not okay. I just-“ and it takes him a few tries to get the words out, nearly choking on a sob that’s fighting so hard to come up. He looks at Will then and has to refrain from slicking his damp hair back where it dangles in front of his pretty eyes. “I need you to know how important you are to me, okay?”

This is a volume 2 rewrite because what was all that?? Somethings are still canon compliant but I’m a Lover’s Lake Gate truther. These two deserved sunshine and this is my attempt to give it to them.

Summary
Will Byers knew what he had to do. There was a reason why he had been taken all those years ago, a reason why he was different. A reason for why his neck would feel cold, why he could look through the eyes of the Demos and control them. Why he could kill them. He had to do this - he no longer could afford to be afraid, and so without looking back he ran.
Mike Wheeler knows he should trust his gut. Knows that when it tightens in fear, when it feels like he had just swallowed a weight - when it feels like something was wrong. He should listen, but he didn't. And now, now he was seriously wishing he did as he watched Will run off into the abyss, leaving him behind.

Fate played its games - they were only pawns in the universes grand game of chest. Perhaps in another universe the battle went differently. Perhaps El defeated the Flayer, perhaps their plan of attacking the beast with their guns and fire worked. Perhaps they were able to escape, having destroyed any and all traces of the upside down behind them. Perhaps in 18 months they would be crossing the stage to graduation, happy and no longer scared.
That wasn't this universe, and that wasn't how the story goes.

The phone rings and his mom answers with a cheery tone and bright smile. "Hello?" Her smile widens upon hearing the voice on the end of the line. "Joyce! It's so nice to hear your voice. How are you?" Mike listens to the conversation as he reaches for the newspaper and pulls it to himself. He scans the front page and stops when he sees the date.
November 6th, 1988.
Huh. That explains the Feeling he has. Mike takes a breath and reads the headlines, keeping an ear out for his mom's conversation. "No, Will didn't spend the night here. Is he not at home?" Mike freezes, his blood going cold. The newspaper slips out of his hand, and a pit forms in his stomach.
Will is missing.
