As they danced, they saw each other in overlapping paintings. Like a canvas that lived, a new painting layered on top of old, and yet, one could still see the old brushstrokes layered beneath.
When Lune looked at Sciel, she didn’t just see her wife with smile lines. She saw the grieving girl she shared comfort with at the Crooked Tower. She saw the expeditioner who fought and bled beside her just for a chance to live another day. She saw the friend who told her it was going to be okay when they had just lost one of their friends.
When Sciel looked at Lune, she didn’t just see her wife with gray hair. She saw the lonely girl at the Crooked Tower burdened with her parents’ loss and mission. She saw the expeditioner that pulled everyone forward again and again as she continued to believe in the mission when they couldn’t. She saw the friend who reconnected with her as they gazed at the stars.
All these brushstrokes, even the old, especially the imperfect, were what made them ethereal in each other's eyes.

Alicia could not save Gustave from her father's ambush, but she managed to keep him from dying. Having learned the truth about their world and the Paintress, he wants nothing more than to catch up to the rest of his expedition and warn them before they can inadvertently wipe out their own people, and the fact that he has just suffered a couple of technically-fatal injuies is not going to stop him.

The climb is steeper than Sciel remembers, and the metal groans softly beneath her as she ascends the final ladder. Her hand ghosts along rusted beams warped by time and ink, passing the old scratched initials—lovers used to come up here, the letterings long since faded with the oxidation.
She almost laughs at herself. What was she hoping for? That the room might still feel the same? That she might feel the same?
Then she steps inside, and the moment her eyes adjust—
“Sciel,” Lune says in a breath caught somewhere in between. Her guitar disappears in a flurry of chroma particles. “Of course you’d run into me up here.”
