Cliff Marleau can be a dumbass, it’s fair to say - anyone can, some people would claim it more likely for men, and some people would certainly claim that being in a profession that involves violence, speed, and sharp things, and a ridiculous amount of travel all on a regular basis would make it pretty likely for someone to be a dumbass. He does dumb shit sometimes, but it’s usually pretty basic.
Actually, how this started was years ago, when he still felt just barely out of being a rookie himself and Coach asked him to keep a watch on their new Russian rookie Ilya Rozanov, now Boston’s captain and one of Cliff’s good friends.
And Cliff is pretty damn curious about the girlfriend Ilya swears he doesn’t want to have.
OR: Cliff's investment in getting Ilya to admit he's more invested than normal in Montreal Jane throws him and the Boston Raiders down the path of queer allyship.

Boston.
Shane just got traded to fucking Boston. To where Ilya was. With no apparent fucking reason in the middle of the season. He just won them two cups, why was this happening?

Shane gets traded in the middle of the 2016/2017 season, just before the All-Stars. The Tuna Meltdown never happens and Shane and Ilya amicably decide to stop seeing each other but remain ‘friends’. Both are very ‘happy’ with this decision until Hollander is traded to Boston. Now they must work with each other on the same team while Shane wonders what the hell happened in Montreal to get him traded in the first place. The Boston Raiders learn that Shane Hollander is not a chicken, or a virgin (lol) like everyone believes. And the Metros learn just how important Shane was in winning those cups.
And Cliff Marleau is just trying to figure out why Ilya’s messages to Jane stopped.

They were nearly the same height, but James' presence seemed to tower miles above him. His was gaze unrelenting.
"What are you on about," The detective responded, wiping the sweat from his dampening palms. His trousers crinkled under the weight of the swipe.
For once, Sherlock couldn't look past James' smug expression, not to catch even a glimpse of the other man's mind. Tried as hard as he would, he just couldn't work out what the other man was thinking. All that registered was the dark scent of his cologne, the breath of pores that sprinkled his face. The angularity of his jaw that somehow escaped him in the past. And his eyes, oh god, his eyes.
Everything about James was fashioned sharply, like a knife against his chest.
That thought struck something in Sherlock, and he went up like dry linen catching fire.
