Summary
Simon faked his death to get away from the cult of Eden. He’s managed to make a home for himself on an uncharted, uninhabited island off the Florida Keyes.
Grace is kidnapped by a couple of people from Eden, who intend to ransom him for enough money to secure a political opportunity for the Father.
But the kidnapping goes wrong and Grace is tossed overboard. He washes up unconscious on the shore of a small, uncharted island off the Florida Keyes while Carl and Eva desperately search for their missing scientist.

Simon was fully aware he would be debriefing with Director Stratt the moment Dr. Grace was safe. He had known it would happen from the moment he stepped between an unknown danger and the most beloved person on the Gansu. He’d known and done it anyway.
What he hadn’t expected was how his life would change in response to this choice.

Ryland Grace didn’t really want to go into detail about the 9 (“was it 9? Simon, do all of these count?” “If you have to ask, then yes, Ry, they do.”) times he was kidnapped. Though it seemed to come up naturally while discussing the tally and parameters breakdown while talking to Simon.

The Vat is stressed. Ryland Grace seems to be Kidnap Catnip, Carl can’t take any time away without someone trying to steal the biologist, and Simon and Grace seem to be laughing about whether some of the most stressful things to happen on the Project counted, or were disqualified on technicalities.

Ryland Grace would rather be anywhere else. He’d even rather be listening to the SWoC (Staggering Waste of Carbon) explain, badly, his latest published work. Anywhere would be better than waking up, tied to a chair, and missing orientation with the team who should be working on Ryland’s greenhouse.
Ryland would feel worse for the Vat’s security team, who were no doubt being lectured by Eva Stratt (and probably Carl, too. I know it was you who scared the Biology Department, you’re not slick, dude), if he wasn’t expecting to have one himself when they finally came to get him.
Though he hoped they’d hurry up. His captor was insane.
