Summary
The NHL keeps a Central Registry of every team’s Emergency Backup Goaltender, or EBUG, an individual who must be prepared to play for either the home or visiting team should both goalies be taken out of commission. When the Registry was digitized in the mid 90’s a clerical error was made, and David Hollander has remained on file as Montreal’s EBUG. When Boston plays a preseason game in Montreal at the beginning of the 2017/2018 season, both of their goalies are taken out and David Hollander suddenly finds himself in the net in Boston black and yellow.

I’ve been watching and reading about hockey for about 15 years, and when Heated Rivalry took off, I decided to put my mountain of saved links to good use. This guide is intended to give information about life as a professional hockey player, designed for fic writers who want to get the logistics right, from what Shane and Ilya's calendars look like to what their contracts say, and add realistic color to their Heated Rivalry or Hockey RPF fics.
This is not a "Hockey 101" for the game itself, as there are many other sources for that.
Contains some minor spoilers for The Long Game, but none for the major plot developments. I use "NHL" throughout, following Rachel's usage in the books.

The Winner's Room was one of those archaic things about hockey that had somehow stuck around over the years. Despite how homophobic the League was — or maybe because of how homophobic the League was. The Room was about power, about dominance. It was about making the losers debase themselves for the winners' pleasure.

Summary
Sid has a lot of responsibilities as captain of the Penguins. He has to come up with new and interesting motivational speeches and deliver them at appropriate times - between periods in a close game, during long and tiring playoff runs, at the beginning of a new season. He has to handle the rookies. Take them out to lunch, welcome them to the team, make sure they have a place to live, handle the emotions that come with making the jump to the NHL, all while dealing with them being terrified of him because he’s Sid. He has to talk to the coaches and front office to make sure everyone’s on the same page about the team’s direction. Of course, he also has to handle some of the older guys, the vets who are stuck in a rut, feeling down on themselves but too embarrassed to turn to him for help - so on top of everything else, he has to make sure to pay attention to everyone so he can jump in before things go too far in a bad direction.
One thing that he absolutely point-blank refuses to add to his list of captainly duties, though, is taking care of nesting goalies.

During that week, there is therapy by proxy, a request for emotional support nudes, a romantic declaration about pizza toppings, a disagreement about who turned who gay and another disagreement about whether Montreal Voyageurs games are better than porn.
Ilya: Reporter got my number and is asking what I think about parliament trying to ban conversion therapy
