    Summary

Every screen in the room blazed with the same breaking news feed. An alien voice had just asked for him by name on live television.

“Mr. Grace?” little Jamal whispered from the front row, eyes huge behind his glasses. “Is that really you they’re talking about? Like, you you?”

Ryland’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted to escape and hide under the desk with the class hamster. He was just Mr. Grace. The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.

The marker slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.

    Summary

The blond’s hands are raised up above his head, slowly, like a trail of blood from an open wound, blue eyes set on him from the ground, footsteps cautiously making their way towards Simon’s bed ladder. Simon’s knees come to curl in towards his stomach, his arm going to wrap itself securely around his legs, only for the sensation to never reach them. A quick glance to his empty shoulder, and Simon looks towards the top of the bunk, blinking away the burning in his eyes.

Ryland is approaching him like he’s a rabid dog, and, for once, Simon wishes someone didn’t see him as one that bites.

Simon wishes that he didn’t feel like a ghost walking around in his own skin, anymore. He was so, so tired.

“I’m not an animal,” Simon huffs out, turning his face towards the other human, and Ryland vaguely notes the fact that, in the light, one of his eyes looks a deep, crimson red.

    “I didn’t mean to-”

    “I know. Nobody ever does.”

    OR

Simon has a nightmare, and Ryland has a perfect idea on how to help.

    Summary

It’s not until Marta picks up the medical bag that she notices that something is wrong.

She can hear Harlan still singing upstairs in the attic, just like she can hear everyone downstairs getting ready for bed, just like she can smell Walt’s cigarettes, the incense Joni is burning in her room, a thousand different things her senses are picking up that Marta has learned to ignore, learned to put to one side.

    But this--this Marta can’t ignore.

Because it’s Ransom’s scent lingering in the room, Ransom’s Tom Ford cologne lingering in a room he has no reason to be in, and as Marta lifts the bag to her nose and takes a careful sniff of the handles--it’s Ransom’s scent, human sweat and pheromones and man-made perfume lingering on a medical bag he has no reason to be touching in the first place.

    Summary

Mindy Park is rapidly realising that the first intelligent extraterrestrial to make contact with the human race thinks they’re fucking stupid. She’s pretty sure that Dr Grace isn’t accurately translating half the things Rocky is saying, but most of what he is telling her is that Rocky has a better way of doing what NASA wants them to do, and honestly, it seems like Rocky is mostly right. She probably doesn’t want to know what the other half of what Grace’s new alien friend is saying, if the things that are making it through what she’s calling the “middle school teacher filter” are “why would you do something the dumb way when you could do it the right way”.

    or,

Mindy has a headache, Grace has trauma, Mark is confused and Rocky is wondering how humans made it in to space when they're all so, so dumb.
