    Rumi's jaw tightened, her eyes focusing on some point in the space between Mira and Zoey, "It's not something that can be explained. It just is. A fact of nature, like how turtles have shells and tigers have stripes. I just need you to trust me when I tell you I'm not worthy of it."

    Or, demons impersonate Rumi and Mira kissing in public. Mira spirals, Rumi breaks down and Zoey's insecurities implode.

    Mi lives in Paradise.

    True, it's not perfect: there are the demons, of course, and retirement from the performing life is far from leisurely, what with appearances to make, interviews to give, and helping her wife manage the label they started up. Plus, in a few years' time, they'll both need to begin the process of finding and training the next generation of Hunters.

    But apart from that, it's perfect: she's married to the love of her life, shares a beautiful, healthy, happy daughter with her, and the Honmoon is holding up in the interim between Hunters. She couldn't ask for more.

    Until Rumi comes to breakfast wearing a turtleneck on a summer's morning, and Eden ends.

    "I know they look bad," Rumi had said as they sat on the couch hours ago, freshly showered and pajamaed. Biting her lip she'd forcibly kept her eyes on the picture window as she held her arms out so Mira and Zoey could examine and gawk at the craggy fissures spiderwebbing across her skin.

    She hadn't finished the sentence and Mira and Zoey didn't jump in with placations or assurances. What was there to say?

    They'd promised no more lies, and the patterns did look bad.

    And Mira hates herself for the thought.
