The truth is that Nefer once thought blindness was a complete darkness, though she now knows that it varies. She had opened her eyes once — perhaps directly to spite Lauma’s mandates — and saw only flickers of light, concentrated where Lauma stood. “You’d doom everyone to suffocating in the vacuum of space, just for me? I’m so honoured.” Kafka wrapped her free hand around Himeko’s thigh, squeezing lightly above a lipstick mark she left there.
She’s oddly affectionate. This was another recent change, one that came alongside her staying the night. It made complicated swirls unfurl inside Himeko’s chest.
Or: They've spent so many nights together, Himeko no longer knows what their relationship is supposed to mean.

Summary
Himeko has never really been a dog person. They are loud, insistent, unpredictable and always too eager in ways she found vaguely exhausting.
She much preferred bunnies and rabbits. They were creatures that existed without demanding attention, that occupied space gently. Even cats, with their selective affection and careful boundaries, made sense to her.
They did not arrive uninvited. They did not impose.
As such, she's not really sure what to do when the puppy who ran away from home ages ago arrives on her doorstep battered, bruised and sopping wet.
