Summary
If anyone important had been paying close enough attention before things got out of hand, they would probably say it started with the fire. A fair assumption to make, given how circumstances unfolded afterwards. A convenient metaphor, even, for the way that such a comparatively small event exploded into something so destructive and uncontrollable.
They would be wrong, of course. It started with something much smaller than that.
It started with a meeting at a club.
No, that isn't quite right, either. It started with an argument in a five star hotel that spiraled into betrayals and bitterness.
Except really… it started with a stolen skull. With a new real estate development. With the sheer bad luck to be embraced by the wrong clan. With a cult on the other side of the country. With control. With the excision of a tumor, sliced clean of muscle and flesh, leaving behind deep-seated decay and paranoia. With ancient feuds. With the firstborn.
From far enough away, everything looks like it came from the same root. But it's easiest to say it started with the meeting.
