    "I’m telling you, the breakers are dead. There is no way there's power in there," Officer Miller said, his flashlight beam cutting a jagged path through the heavy dust of the foyer.

    The daycare had been a dead zone for years, a concrete shell of primary colors faded by time and neglect. It was the kind of place where the air felt thick with the smell of old carpets and damp drywall. As they moved deeper into the hallway, the sound of their boots on the linoleum was the only thing breaking the silence, a rhythmic thud that echoed off walls peeling like sunburnt skin. They passed a row of cubbies, some still holding a single, petrified sneaker or a disintegrated mitten, remnants of a childhood that had moved on a decade ago.
