Price had not briefed him properly for this. He’d come expecting a mellowed out, injured, perhaps even loopy Ghost. Not this firm, spiteful beast before him. Ghost was a marvel, he always had been. Soap had no idea how to handle his lieutenant pouting before him, requesting an audience with the dead.
Or, Ghost gets injured, and while in the hospital forgets his mom’s dead. This is above Soap’s pay grade, but he tries his best.

In linguistics, a false friend is a word in a different language that sounds similar to a word in your own, but differs significantly in meaning. No word in any Eridian language could possibly be mistaken for English. But Erid absolutely has false friends.
In his right mind, Grace would easily identify the mistaken assumptions inhibiting his integration on Erid. They are:
1: A molecular biologist and a sapient rock can cobble together translation software that reflects the etymological nuance of an entire alien language.
2: Eridians are enough like humans to have an area 51 and look forward to using it.Unfortunately, Grace hasn’t been in his right mind in years.
Or: a ‘Return to Erid’ story where Grace struggles to touch down alone.

Summary
The story explores an alternate version of the Hail Mary Mission preparation in which Stratt does not keep Grace sedated. Forced to remain conscious through the medical procedures meant to prepare his body for three years in coma, Grace has to cooperate under fear, pain, and coercion. The story focuses on the psychological and ethical tension between violation and care, survival and consent, and the team’s attempt to keep him functional without pretending that cooperation means agreement.

Summary
After nearly starving to death on the way to Erid, Grace is relieved to find that most of the Eridians welcome him with open arms and kindness. They help him with nutrition and a biodome and a teaching position he can find pride in.
The key word, of course, being "most".
When Grace ends up being stalked by an Eridian with a nasty penchant for despising humans, he has to fight for his life in order to survive on the only planet he has left to call home.
