Summary
After Yi City, Song Lan finds Xue Yang alive. He should kill him. He wants to. But something of Xiao Xingchen’s spiritual energy rises from the ruins and refuses the blade, binding Song Lan to the one person he cannot forgive. Xue Yang should have died with the city he ruined. Instead, wounded, furious, and exposed in a way he has spent his whole life hiding, he survives and Song Lan is forced to keep him alive.

Remember that talisman Wei Wuxian creates in ep. 8 of The Untamed? The one he later uses on Xue Yang? He speculates on calling it "Binding" or "Bonding". And I thought: Neat! What if that is literally what it does and what if XXC uses it on XY and something goes wrong and it has some unexpected side effects?

“It’s me,” Song Lan nodded.
“What are you doing here?” Xiao Xingchen asked, his lips turning upwards uncertainly. Song Lan didn’t like seeing his smile so unsure.
