He was cut down by those words, floored, emptied, hallowed out and stung. She never uttered such things, never shared any weaknesses with anyone. He was filled with an agonising helplessness. He wanted to put her back in her body, to watch the two halves of her become one again.
The Scully in his bed, reunited with her soul, her warmth and her movement.
The Scully at his side, rejoined with her muscles and cells and choices.Tears clung at his lashes and his jaw ached from pretending that he had any control over anything.

His work was the most important, although Mulder would like to meet the man who attempted to re-write Einstein. Poor sap deserved better than sitting in this basement office anyway. Besides, he'd already been cursed with the name 'Dana,' the man really didn't deserve to be shafted with the title of 'F.B.I's Most Unwanted' too. Maybe he'd try to track him down, talk to him about his thesis- it really was fascinating.

It usually felt comfortable. It was low stakes time in the presence of a beautiful woman; his scale dwarfing hers in a way it never seemed to in the field, the scent of her perfume and her hair. He could snatch the briefest of looks at her profile with little recourse, catch the flame of her hair in the headlights the chiaroscuro that settled on her features. That face was built to be rendered by a great master he thought, Rembrandt maybe. No, he corrected, Caravaggio; dramatic and reverential, like she was, and lit from within.
He realised that he shouldn’t really be so aware of all of this, it wasn’t entirely professional. She had an effect on him that he tried hard to deny.
