“He hates me,” Findekáno decided. “And so he should! How could your father see unaided what I needed to have shoved into my head? I was as good as Sauron’s confederate in the matter.”

Summary
“Did Viserys ever tell you that her first word was—”
“Uncle, yes. He was very unhappy about that, I can assure you.”
“He still is, he was complaining about it when Aegon learned how to talk.”
“Ridiculous. Everything he’s had, and it’s never been enough for him.”
“Sometimes I think he’d be happiest if he could have both of you in your own separate boxes. And he’d keep you in different rooms, and he’d never take you out at the same time.”
“And what about your box?”
“I would never be important enough for a box of my own. If he could control both of you, exactly as he liked, he wouldn’t even know that I existed. I’m nothing, in the end. Or I am a box that children can come out of, and that’s all. That’s all I’ve ever been to anyone, my whole life.”
“I’m sure Rhaenyra wouldn’t agree with that.”
Alicent rolls her eyes. “Rhaenyra hates me.”

Summary
Alicent waited as long as she possibly could. After spending what felt like hours pacing up and down the length of the rooms her uncle had set aside for her, resisting the temptation to tear her cuticles to shreds, she wrote to Daemon and then resumed her frantic pacing as soon as she was sure the raven was on its way, until by way of reply she heard the strange clicking sound that meant Caraxes was flying overhead, a sound that terrified her as a child almost as much as it delighted Rhaenyra but tonight made her feel at ease in a way that she hasn’t in days.
She wrote to Daemon because she knew he would understand. She knew that even if he was annoyed, he would come right away, without asking, and, unlike Rhaenyra, would not require an explanation for behavior that Alicent cannot describe to any other person without sounding utterly and completely deranged.

Summary
Later, after it was all over, Rhaenyra found that she remembered very little about the day of her mother’s funeral. She couldn’t recall conversations, the names and faces of the strangers and near-strangers who came to pay their respects, or even what she had done or where she had gone once the pyre stopped burning. When she tried to close her eyes and conjure up the last moment she ever saw her mother, all that came to her were other images, other feelings: the way the cold wind whipped her tear-streaked face; the distance her father placed between himself and everyone around him; Daemon’s low voice in her ear; and, most vividly of all, the weight of Otto Hightower’s hand on her shoulder, grasping her quickly but firmly as he walked past her and back toward his children.
It was strange. He had never touched her before. He had never paid any real attention to her at all. She had seen his probing gaze directed at her father, at her uncle, at Alicent, but never at her. And yet that day he chose to acknowledge her, and she was so grateful to be acknowledged at all that she never thought to ask him why.
