You sniffle, using the flannel sleeve to wipe the wetness from your cheeks. “Sorry. Bad dream. Didn’t want to wake you.” You don’t tell him that the dream had been about him. That the last thing you saw behind your eyelids before you woke up in a cold sweat with his name on your lips was him and Ellie leaving you behind as the horde of infected chasing you overtook you. In your nightmare, his face had been cold and uncaring as he watched you get swallowed up by the swarm. Now his forehead wrinkles in concern. “Just needed some air. You can go back to sleep. I’ll be in in a minute.”
Joel frowns at the thought of you out here all by yourself, shivering from the cold and your tears. You could’ve woken me, he almost says. But he thinks sometimes that you and him are cut from the same sad cloth. He wouldn’t have woken you if the roles had been reversed. He’d be out here on these steps too. Once you make peace with being alone for the rest of your life, it’s almost more painful to try to walk back into the fold than to just stick it out.
