Summary
Something heavy slams into her head when she no longer has the strength to moan or sneer. She sees with her barely open eyes, blood pouring all around.
"ELLIE, PLEASE GET UP. ELLIE, FUCKING, GET UP."
Her weak brain realizes that apparently this cycle will never end. She also remembers and deeply regrets that she didn't tell JJ the last time how much she loves him.
TLDR: Ellie kills Abby on that beach after all and returns home. She gets closer to JJ. She's trying to reconnect with Dina. Lev returns to Jackson, and Ellie knows this cycle will never end.
The events take place sixteen years after Ellie's departure to Santa Barbara.

A woman peeks around the corner, and Ellie can confidently say that she knows more about her than about any stranger.
TLDR: Living as a hermit, Ellie has unlearned communication with people. Old acquaintances who have suddenly returned to life break the usual pattern of life.

It's been six years since Ellie and Dina last saw each other. They reconnect as they remember their close childhood friendship and get to know each other again as adults.
Ellie is out of the military and still adjusting to life back in Jackson. She and Abby, who served with her, work on the Miller family cattle ranch. Dina has just moved back to the small town and is eager to reignite old friendships.
Ellie harbors secrets from family and friends as she struggles with addiction and trauma from combat. While those closest to her can be great supports, they can also be harsh critics. A beacon of hope, Dina is a welcome reprieve to what Ellie views as a miserable and unsatisfying life. But Dina struggles with her own trauma and how to foster and navigate a mutually supportive relationship with Ellie.

Summary
Natalie never expected to die a hero. She expected to die alone, coked out in the back of some shitty van, a victim to herself and her fucking impulses. Or, she expected to die in fear, victim to a hunt or a sacrifice to some stupid Wilderness God she doesn’t believe in. So, in some ways, maybe this is a plus:
Yay me, I guess. At least they can put ‘she tried’ on my gravestone.
But this doesn’t feel like a victory. All it feels like is cold. A cold, lonely death, buried in the snow and completely, entirely alone. A useless death. A death that no one will remember.
This is how she dies - not with a bang, but with a whimper.
And then she wakes up.
OR: Natalie never makes it to the mountain. A sudden blizzard claims her first. But when she opens her eyes, she's back to the day of the crash. This time, she’s determined to keep everyone alive - even if The Wilderness has other plans.
