"It's about bunnies, right?” the boy wants to know, pointing at the book in Lan Zhan’s arms. “I like bunnies, they are cute! Tell me about it!"
Lan Zhan is a bit overwhelmed by all of these questions, but the boy seems genuinely interested.
"It's about a girl who moves to a new school and is afraid, and meets a lonely bunny who needs a friend," he tells him. “The bunny is magical, and his bunny family needs help, so he ran away to get help, and now he’s lonely too.”
"Oh no!" the boy cries, "do they become friends in the end?"
Lan Zhan nods.
"You are also new here, right?" the boy asks. "Do you also need a friend? Because I wanna be your friend!"
Lan Zhan considers this. He cannot remember having had a friend before. He looks at this boy who sits next to him, smiling widely, and decides that it would be…pleasant. Having him as a friend.
Lan Zhan looks at the boy with wide eyes, and shyly nods.
The boy beams at him and takes his hand.
"I am A-Ying,” he introduces himself, “and we are now best friends forever!"

Retrospection is a curious thing. In hindsight, the signs were there. Power outages, freak storms, crows, and compulsions. Not that Lan Zhan had ever felt Wei Ying’s compulsion. Not until tonight.
Retrospection, Lan Zhan thinks once more, as shadows slink along their ceiling, slowly suffocating harsh fluorescent lights, and lick at Wei Ying’s hands.
“All this time.”
It’s not a question, but Wei Ying answers anyway. “Yes.”
