Telepaths are rather rare, so rare in fact that hardly a soul who isn't one himself even knows that they exist. Well, Erik knows. He's incredibly certain that he knows, so very certain in fact, that he, and many more like him, are willing and happy to dedicate their lives to rooting out those blights on humanity and exposing them for what they are: the cause of all evil and disunity haunting humanity. Haunting humans. Because really, who in their right minds would refer to those things, as human?

“How long have I been here?” Will asked, but immediately waved off her answer, realizing it didn’t matter either way. “Look, my name is Will Graham – I don’t know what happened but you have to give my partner a call.”
“I’ll get the doctor,” she told him, her voice trained to the mellow murmur just about all medical professionals used on omegas.
Will opened his mouth to tell her that there was no need, that he felt fine, and if she would just listen, he could discharge himself and be out of her hair in thirty minutes flat. He grabbed the safety rails and forced himself to stand, though the motion made him a little dizzy. Something on his peripheral vision grabbed at him. The whiteboard strip above the hospital bed – W GRAHAM-LECTER, omega, male, B positive – struck him like a physical blow.

Hannibal has effectively replaced Will in every facet of his life by the time he is released from prison at the hands of the Chesapeake Ripper. The man takes his job, his friends, his one-time crush, and his pride.
In a spiteful random purchase made at a gas station, Will finds a way for two to play that game, and puts in motion a much wilder method of replacing Hannibal than he was really planning for.
