Summary

Summary
In 294 AC, a succession crisis has erupted following the deaths of Robert Baratheon, his brothers Stannis and Renly, and Robert's children. The exact circumstances of their deaths are unclear, but it's known that Stannis had discovered Cersei's infidelity with Jaime Lannister, leading to a chaotic conflict in the Red Keep that resulted in multiple deaths, including Cersei and Jaime.
With only young Shireen Baratheon remaining of Robert's line, the succession is in question. Jon Arryn has called a Great Council at Harrenhal to settle the matter. The main claimants are Shireen Baratheon and Viserys Targaryen, who has returned from exile.
Eddard Stark arrives at Harrenhal, carrying the secret of Jon Snow's true parentage - that he is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, and thus a potential claimant to the Iron Throne. -
