But it is new, so new. When Nyx isn’t looking, Thanatos can't help but explore.
So new: the stone and gloom of Tartarus, the orange burn of Asphodel, the rolling fields of Elysium. The coolness of the ground beneath the bushes, the way they catch at his hair when he hides in them. The light touch of the butterflies that soon begin to follow him, lonely souls that they are. The way they fluster and flutter as Mort snaps at them.

At first it made sense- he recalibrated his fantasies to more attainable ones. They weren't completely grounded in reality, Gibson's berth was too small for pretty much anything, too small for just himself let alone another person. Billy Gibson can't believe this is his life now: walking for hours on end, breathless, sweaty and sleepless. He feels the muscles in is legs aching, he had a cramp earlier that morning but that didn't stop the march, the straps, tight on his chest with the weight he carries, don't help him keeping balance.
They've been out since dawn, rocky terrain under his feet. The early hours had been cold, now the sun is high and he's sweating. In this landscape everything is against him. There are no breaks nor pauses, at least not until lunch time, he's tried to get them to stop but nobody wants to hear his pleas. There's only a strange unnatural silence around them. Billy sighs, wonders if he's ever going to make it alive, to go back home in one piece, the only thing left is for him to focus on is his breath."Christ, Billy" Solomon blurts, turning back towards him "it's only been an hour."

‘Hickey had found Billy Gibson in his cabin, and drawn the curtain across almost lazily, to give them both a bit of privacy. He knew an open curtain would arouse less suspicion than a closed one – but it was all bustle as the watch changed over, and besides, the officers who might want for Gibson at this hour were either on deck or abed. He’d checked. Lieutenant Irving with his sanctimonious little head stuck in a Bible somewhere in the officer’s mess or his cabin. Lieutenants Little and Hodgson on deck, a fine pair, one with a face like a kicked puppy and the other like a puppy that ought to be kicked.
So, they’d not be disturbed. Not for a few hours.’
