Summary
The Warlock of the West, Varuna Maelstrøm, was the last surviving Cardinal Warlock.
And he was currently on the run from the powerful High Fae, High Emperor Kieran Darkhölme, who had defeated all his enemies, including the other three Cardinal Warlocks, and engulfed the world in a deep darkness.
Add to this the fact that Emperor Kieran is obsessed with Varuna and has killed everyone close to him in order to make him High Empress of Noes, whether he liked it or not.
Therefore, Varuna has no choice but to flee from him while simultaneously seeking more power and a way to break the Thread, that which allows Kieran to always know where he is, even when Varuna has been jumping from universe to universe.
But he never expected to end up as another High Fae, Tamlin of the Spring Court.

Buddhism dictates that once you die, you can be reincarnated, and depending on your Karma, that new world may be better then the last. Following that belief, he must have done something truly horrible in a past life to be placed in his current one.
No one, especially not the true Itadori Yuuji, deserved to play host to the King of Curses. He took comfort in the fact that a random teenager was not stuck with such a responsibility. Despite erasing the kid from existence by accident.
He just never expected the changes that rippled out, when in reality, he probably should have.
