Summary
In August 1882, bounty hunters Jess and Jhett McFarlane, and sheriff and deputy Thomas Walker and Joe Greenman begin to encounter some strange things. The weather is weird, the animals ain't acting right, and the dead have risen. Is this the end of the world?
The answer isn't so simple. When an out of control fire ravages Thomas and Joe's town, they uproot their lives and head for New Mexico to meet with a former friend who will take them in. Along the way, strange, seemingly unkillable creatures emerge from the earth. What are they, and where did they come from? No one knows for sure. But one thing is certain: they are out for blood.
Meanwhile, an entire state away, Jess McFarlane is thrust into an almost lethal encounter with one of the creatures. Injured and fighting an infection from its deadly bite, she realises that, though she managed to escape death, she hadn't been completely freed from its clutches. Unwilling to sit around waiting for the infection to take hold, she sets off on one last adventure before she meets her doom. Unfortunately, fate has other plans for her.
