It’s been weeks of sparring, but finally, finally, Historia’s winning; finally, she has Ymir breathless, on her back, inches away from her boundless breast; finally, she holds her down gently, more gently than maybe she should.
Ymir looks at her hungrily from below, like she used to be a monster and yet never tried tastier prey. Historia’s on top, knee pressed into Ymir’s perfect stomach, enough to paralyze her but not enough to hurt. She is still lying to Ymir even though she wants her, is still pretending she’s Christa Lenz, sweet like sweetgrass, a humble country girl from the middle of nowhere who’s all aw-shucks and bless-you and never does anything wrong, not the selfish bitch she knows she is.

“I’ve loved you,” she says, “since I first learned the word love from a book.”
“Must’ve been quite late in life,” teases Ymir, playing with Historia’s necklace, tracing patterns with her fingers on her collarbone. “What, you never learned to read until you were 16.” She laughs, that loud and reckless and kind laugh that she reserves just for Historia. Ymir’s always loud, and often reckless, but kindness is something she can’t afford often. Only in the privacy of their castle, this one-bedroom cocoon with peeling sickly-yellow paint cracking off the walls. It’s beautiful, she thinks, because it’s theirs. No one can reach them here in their fortress.
“No, I’m serious,” says Historia. “I’m certain. I’ve always loved you.”

“Do you believe it? What Armin says, I mean.”
Ymir barely turns, raising an eyebrow. Her golden eyes locked with Krista’s beautiful blue ones.
“About what?”
Krista goes back to staring at the sky. “The rivers of lava. The endless stretches of sand. The frozen continents. The sea. That whole world out there… beyond the walls,” she says, as if describing a dream, not a real place. “Do you think it really exists?”
Ymir looks away, and the sky suddenly feels emptier.
Of course, she believes in it. She believes it because she’s seen it with her own eyes.
The sea, at least. Just once, too many years ago, while she was being taken away in chains, on a ship that cut through the waters toward nothingness. Where freedom ended and punishment began.
But this, she can’t tell Krista. Not yet. So she swallows, and after a brief pause, simply replies,“Yes. I believe.”
Krista sighs softly, a faint smile forming on her lips.
“If it really exists...” she says, her voice tender, almost a whisper. “I’d like to see it with you.”
