Summary
"You're such a mess" Will giggles, reaching up to turn Mike's head to face him, wiping away at the stew that stuck itself there.
Something, familiar, swirls in Mike's eyes. It causes Will to pause, his hands retracing back.
Slowly, and without speaking, Mike reaches over to the table, grabbing one of the candles—the one that has a faint scent of vanilla— and dragging it to be right beside him. The noise of the glass jar against the wood is piercing in the otherwise silent room.
Will's breath hitches when he sees Mike dip two fingers inside the jar. "What—"
"If you think im a mess, then i can show you messy"

Summary
His eyes drift further, latching to what they always do. It’s an awkward angle to stare at the painting Will had gifted him from, but he always finds himself in this position.
Will’s art was beautiful, always has been, Mike still has a binder full of drawings he was either gifted or managed to get his hands on, they date back to when they were only five. He loves them all the same.
But this painting.
It’s something more. At least, to Mike it is.
OR-
This is about Mike and Will predominantly, and their journey through coping with the grief of Jane’s death while in college. For Mike it’s also dealing with layers of guilt surrounding her death, and his feelings for Will. It takes them time, and Mike might even make friends with a surprisingly helpful roommate, who helps him cope better and learn to accept things.

But it wasn’t a monster that came out of the trees. It was a person. A boy.
Mike froze.
Then he was spotted, and the boy stopped in his tracks; with skillful movements, he quickly slung the rifle off his shoulder and pointed it at Mike’s chest. Mike raised his hands while trying to keep most of his weight on his left leg.
“Whoa. Hey,” Mike said, his eyes wide as he stared at the tip of the rifle. “Just hold on. I’m not—I’m not going to hurt you.”

Summary
“Did it hurt?” He leaned in, looking more closely.
“Well yeah.” Mike laughed nervously. “Still does actually, kind of throbs."
“It looks... really good.” Will’s stare unfixed from the piercing and took in Mike as a whole. His baggy black t-shirt over a tighter long sleeve waffle knit shirt that covered his arms, loose jeans, silver rings, chipped nail polish. And the newest addition: A shiny silver bar bisecting his eyebrow, the skin around it still a little angry.
“When did you get so cool?” Will tilted his head, scrunching his nose. Mike's heart picked up speed.
Mike checked his watch. “About an hour ago when this big dude stabbed me in the face.” With nonchalance that would be squandered instantly if Will caught a glimpse of his pulse. Will laughed a little too hard, eyes lingering on Mike’s face a little too long.
