‘What—?’ Jack started, but Alan was already calling down the hall.
‘Maud!’ he shouted, holding Jack’s gaze. ‘His lordship wants his Christmas present.’

‘Did you decide on train times?’ Edwin asked, resting his head against Robin’s chest. Lying horizontal, listening to the reassuring thud of Robin’s heartbeat, he found the heaviness of his body became more comfortable, something he wanted to settle into, his eyes drifting shut of their own accord even as his mind still raced.
‘Yes,’ Robin said. He stroked a hand absently through his hair. ‘We leave early tomorrow morning. I hope you’re prepared for a circuitous tour of East Anglia to throw Bastoke off the scent.’
‘It’ll give me time to research, I suppose.’
‘As opposed to if we went to Cheetham Hall directly, in which case I’m sure you’d spend that same time occupying yourself with something else,’ Robin teased. ‘Billiards, perhaps.’

As Edwin teaches him about magic, Robin finds himself distracted. Edwin proposes something a little more, uh, hands on.
‘Perhaps we should give it a rest for today,’ Robin suggested, when they parted. His hand slid round to splay over Edwin’s lower back, keeping him close as he lowered his voice. ‘Go and try something I feel more knowledgeable about.’
‘No, no.’ There was a determined look in Edwin’s eye that meant he’d regrouped and was about to tackle a problem from an entirely new angle, and a gleam that had Robin intrigued. ‘I’d be a poor teacher if I couldn’t work with what naturally motivates my student.’
He took a step backwards. Slowly, eyes never leaving Robin’s, he undid the top three buttons of his shirt, parting the starched white fabric.

‘Sharp as a tack, as always, Edwin,’ Adelaide said cheerfully. ‘You’re taking a holiday.’
‘I will very soon,’ Edwin assured them, as he had a dozen times before.
‘No, now,’ Robin said, in his most firm baronet tone. ‘I’ll throw you over my shoulder and carry you to the station myself if I have to.’
Edwin felt himself relenting, and not just because the image was rather appealing.

He saw Kim’s eyes widen, dark brows deepened into a frown, something between concern and confusion. There was a beat where Kim’s hand tightened on his own, a moment where Will wondered, on the gasp of an inhale and the horrible cold plunge of doubt, if he had imagined the whole thing. But then, an unmistakable waft of smoke curled through the crack at the base of the door, and Kim let out a soft hiss.
“Oh, hell.”
Will squeezed his eyes closed, forced himself to feel the floorboards pressing cold and hard against his knees and the balls of his feet. No mud. For now, at least, he was on solid ground.

Akira viciously smothered the hope, because it was impossible. No matter how similar it looked to case notes and essays seen in brief, upside-down flashes across the counter before his attention was drawn away by gloved hands wrapping around a coffee mug and the glint of wine eyes.
His heart beat a staccato rhythm against his chest despite himself, uncaring of how devastating this would be if he was wrong.
He slid his finger beneath the envelope's lip, gently tearing it open. Inside was a small piece of paper. It held one sentence, scrawled in blue ink.

He glanced up as the silence hung a moment too long, ready for his dismissal, and saw an internal war taking place behind Akechi's eyes instead.
Finally, "Come with me." and Akechi turned on a heel and marched away.
Akira blinked, caught off guard. Akechi didn't turn to check Akira was doing as tasked, so sure that he would. Akira smiled fondly. Akechi's choice surprised him, but it was far from unwelcome.
He jogged to catch up, settling at Akechi's side. He didn't even think to ask where Akechi was leading him, just… content to be at his side again.

His knees hurt from sitting on the tile; his head hurts from the nonstop pounding; his entire body is sweating profusely while also feeling as though it’s about to freeze to death. He sheds his dress shirt and tie before stumbling through the doorway to the bed and collapsing, curling up into a ball. The uncomfortable feeling of his sheets touching skin is reviling, but overpowered by the sheer fatigue dragging his soul down.
Akechi falls asleep to the sound of his own heavy breathing. The messy, quiet apartment might as well be housing a corpse instead of a human being.
Or, Ren nursing Akechi back to health.
