So, one afternoon, when Sakura finds herself coloring diligently at her desk—a beautiful piece of crayon art that has blood splatters, shuriken, and men with x’s on their eyes—the teacher suddenly snatches the drawing right out her tiny hands. She gasps dramatically. She pales appropriately. She immediately summons her parents in for a meeting.
When they ask her why she drew this specific image—
“It's what my soulmate dreams about,” she innocently admits.
The teacher’s encouraging smile curdles. Her father blinks slowly as if pained. Her mother glances at her father with a steady, deliberate gaze as one brow arches masterfully. Sakura’s seen this look a few times before. It's the ‘See? This-is-What-Happens-When-you-Have-a-Soulmate’ look.]

“How did I not see this?” Sakura mutters, more to herself than anyone else. “I mean—I should have asked. Instead, I just assumed!”
“He never gives a straight answer,” Temari cuts in, blunt as ever, trying to shoulder the blame.
Sakura shakes her head, shoulders tense. “I mean, he never even paid for any of our meals—”
“When does he ever?” Tenten throws in, brows raised. “You know how cheap he is.”
“Stop defending me!” Sakura snaps, voice a harsh whisper—but then her face crumbles. “I am an idiot.”
“No,” Ino says firmly, slamming her drink down just enough to jolt the table. “The only thing you’re an idiot for is falling for an idiot. Now get over yourself, because we’re going to fix this.”
10 times Sakura hoped Kakashi would take the hint, and the one time she takes matters into her own hands.

Genma snorts. “A student who doesn’t call you sensei.”

“I—know how this feels,” he murmured, agreeing.
Paperwork didn’t help. Lying in her bed didn’t help. Sparring helped. Healing helped. The hospital helped. Drinks at a bar bought for her from across the room helped.
This, Sakura realized, helped. This made it easier.
