“You were close to death.” Gentle fingers massage his scalp. Hal closes his eyes briefly, savoring the sensation. “I convinced them to save you.”
That makes no sense. Their captors care nothing for his survival. Hal is lucky they didn’t jettison him days ago. “Why would they…? How did you…?”
“You need to rest.”
Hal isn’t an idiot. Confusion quickly fades, leaving behind only a horrible understanding. “You gave them something in return.”
Sinestro averts his eyes. “That is irrelevant.”

Summary
The flight back from Crosswinds Corner is a strained and quiet one, though Ollie is happier than he can say to see that ostentatious and ugly castle in the middle of the Nevada desert gone. Tom Kalmaku gets dropped off safely at his own home with little fanfare, and they’re just outside Seattle when Ollie directs Hal down to a vaguely run-down little motel on the outskirts of town instead of the once-fanciful Sherwood Florist. If Hal’s surprised at all, he doesn’t show it.

“My people are going to assume you are female when they see you,” says Sinestro. “Do not take offense.”
“Female?” repeats Hal. “Me? Why?”
Sinestro drifts a little closer until he’s near enough to tap a slender finger against Hal’s forehead. It takes Hal a moment to understand his meaning.
“Are you serious?” Hal begins to laugh, but then he realizes something. “Wait. Is that why you—you—you thought I was a girl!”
Sinestro looks flustered, which is a new experience for Hal. “You have a very small forehead.”
