Summary
Even on the sweet walks of the Shire, things come along that sweep you off your feet—adventures, wizards, children. Bilbo came down, a month after he’d adopted this strange, quiet boy on a whim and a wonder, and found his whole (second) living room scattered with some unholy combination of paint, jam, and mud. Frodo sat in the middle of the mess, with dirty hands and innocence plastered all over his face.
Bilbo leaned on the door because something in that bright grin had taken his balance from him. He went for a mop. He had not felt so at home since thirteen dwarves had tumbled through his round green door. He felt like Frodo had stolen something from him and then given it back better than it had left.
Thievery, perhaps, ran in the family.

It goes like this:
Todd is stubborn, fiercely independent, and refuses to let other people do nice things for him. He's the one who does things for other people, that's his whole thing.
And frankly, that works quite well for Dirk as well. Dirk has had a lifetime of doing for himself, of just scraping by, of the universe giving him "just enough" and never letting him rest. He likes being taken care of.
But sometimes – just sometimes – Todd needs Dirk. And Dirk learns to be there for him.

It becomes overwhelmingly apparent, in an underwhelmingly short amount of time, that there are a number of things about Todd Brotzman that Dirk finds himself somewhat… fascinated by.
...however, there's one “Todd Related Phenomenon” that continues to hold his attention and pique his interest, above almost all others.
This happens to be the curious case of Todd’s (various) blushes.

Todd is an asshole, he knows this about himself – even with Dirk's pep talk in the woods more than a year ago, all he can do is to try his best to suppress his natural asshole-ish instincts. He knows he's going to fuck up eventually, and hates that he knows that Dirk will forgive him when he does. His first response to every tough situation is to lash out or walk away; it's only with great effort that he makes the right decision, continues to support Dirk, works the cases until their close. He's an asshole.
Dirk knows this about Todd, and knows that it makes Todd an incredibly good and brave person.

"Like," Dirk paused, looking around the office at nothing in particular, "you mean, once a month, a person turns into a half human half wolf and goes out for a good howl. Werewolves?"
"Yes, werewolves," Todd said, he was quickly beginning to regret this.

Let’s talk about a Susan who never moved on, who buried her family in English soil and spent the rest of her life trying to find her way home. She did not believe lions were kind, but she always remembered a bow in her schoolgirl hands.
She looked in every old wardrobe she came across. It was casual, everyday– the first day in a new lecture hall, she checked the back of the coat closet. Friends had her over for Christmas dinner and she excused herself to go the bathroom, checked every cabinet and closet, and then headed back in for pudding. She went home with a cute boy she met in a smoky little pub and she checked his wardrobe before she headed home the next morning, heels in hand.
She also went to college, got a political science degree she had to fight for. She got a byline in the local paper, a few ladies’ magazines, then a larger regional publication.
She had mimosa brunches with friends. She read detective novels, never touched fantasy, and finally one day she stepped through an old stone archway barely thinking about it and–-
