Summary
Branch’s eyes go wide. Poppy starts to push herself up on an elbow,
“Bra-?”
Branch throws himself across the room with a cry of pure rage. Poppy shoots to her feet. She barely sees a blur of blue tackle something purple, and then there’s a lot of distracting screaming-
“Wha’s goin on?”
“I don-!” Poppy cuts herself off. She sees violet skin and teal hair, and in one second her confusion flips into a terrible, cold understanding.
“Geoff me!” Creek yells, because Branch is wrestling him, and he’s dealing with it because he’s Branch and he can do anything-
“Branch, the hell are you doing?” John Dory yells, and Poppy thinks she should explain-
But then Poppy sees something green snaking around the back of Branch’s neck, and everything goes red.
JD hauls Branch off Creek, both brothers cursing readily, and Creek manages two ragged breaths and half a smug smile-
-Before Poppy tackles him.
---I tried to make a “trolls watch trolls” fic, but it evolved into some other monstrosity so now were watching EVERYONEs pasts, theres a bunch of weird meta jokes, and i need to be hit with a shovel.
Also creek is there and poppy makes a genuine attempt to kill him

Summary
Poppy sits across from Branch. His head droops with exhaustion and his hair is hanging down, and he doesn’t want to let anyone touch him because he’s hurt all over, and it’s kinda terrifying. The sort of terrifying that lives in a pit in your stomach, creeping and growing no matter how hard you try to push it down and reassure yourself.
But he looks up at her and smiles, tired but bright and beautiful and breathtaking, and Poppy can’t do anything but smile back. Elation fills her chest, and it doesn’t drown out the fear and anger and worry, but it makes a space for hope.
She offers a paw and Branch intertwines his fingers with hers, ever so lightly. They take a few minutes there in the quiet, dark safety of the servants quarters.
Things are going to be okay. Poppy going to make them okay.

“Obviously it won't work, but we don’t really have a choice.” Carlos exhaled, rubbing at his eyes with the heels of his palms. Diego stood before him, a pained look on the young man's face. He stepped forward, and engulfed his younger cousin in a hug.
“Dammit.” he hissed, pulling his younger cousin, younger brother, closer, fighting to hold back tears. “I should have killed her. Years ago. I should have killed her so she couldn't have done this, so she couldn't have done anything to you.” He took a shaky breath.
Carlos shook his head, his own eyes stinging. “It wouldn't have worked…. Not then, not now. They’re too powerful.”

He’s sitting bolt upright in a second, taking in his surroundings. The room is small, just big enough for the red couch and the odd thin screen across from him. The floor is coated in a plush red carpet, and there’s a generic picture hung on the wall like what you’d see in a hotel.
Concerningly, there are no visible doors or windows.

Summary
This is the worst part, honestly. It's not the frantic churning in his gut when he uses his magic, it's not the icy dread of what happens right after when he's trying frantically to avoid suspicion, it's not even the looks he gets when there's a few too many knights looking at him.
It's when they're back in the safety of Janus's chambers and Janus is swanning around like he's the one that saved the day, and he takes the opportunity to get as many insults into Virgil as he can.

“Virgil!” Patton yelled just as he popped his finger in his mouth.
Virgil had stiffened at the sound of his name and whirled back to face a very mad Patton and a surprised Logan. The taste of avocado had hit the back of his throat, which almost made him feel great: it tasted just as earthy as he remembered it being when his mother made it, with just the right bitter aftertaste that made Virgil want more, although he didn’t remember it being quite so prominent--
“That was the Prince’s Cake!” Patton had shouted, “As in Prince Remus! I don’t care if you are in good graces with his highness! That was a stupid- stupid -stupid-- what on earth were you thinking? Virgil--!!”
And that was when Virgil had first felt the burning, like an itch in his throat that had suddenly swept him up. Patton’s voice had faded as he grabbed for his own throat, for his chest, for anything to remove the sudden agony ravaging his body. He had toppled straight off the counter in the middle of whatever else Patton had shouted, taking the cake right down with him.
