He'd been too comfortable. Qifrey almost laughed when it hit him: this entire predicament was supposed to be anything but reassuring, but somehow, the gentle pass of time had withered away the sharp edges of his suffering. Just like the tides would smooth over the rocks of the shore again and again until they became nothing but sand, he'd grown to expect the pain, until it wasn't as excruciating anymore. It was almost like having a reason for it was enough to soften the blow.
And it did. Stars, it did.
(Or, the Silverwood tree is growing again, but this time it won't go away. Luckily, Qifrey's family has no intention of ever letting him go.)

Qifrey immediately stiffened, which was the opposite effect Olruggio had hoped to draw.
“…Isn’t that forbidden magic?”
Olruggio choked on his laugh, surprised, until Qifrey wriggled his way out and drew up Olruggio’s sleeves and it dawned on Olruggio that the other boy wasn’t joking—he was looking for markings on his arms, a sigil to make sense of this “magic”.
Olruggio swallowed tightly.
It was fine—it would be fine. He would be the one to show Qifrey, from now on, that it didn’t take magic to be comforted.—
Olruggio teaches Qifrey the magic of hugging. Fifteen years later, Qifrey returns the favor.
