    Summary

Residual flare: noun [daemonology] the visible light that surrounds a daemon, their partner, and the tether that connects the two.

    //

Rumi is a demon. She has a soul—her daemon, Hyeon-seo, is everything anyone could hope for in a partner—but there's something wrong with the tether. No one can know that Hyeon-seo still hasn't settled, long, long after he ought to have. It'll be fixed. They'll both be fixed when the honmoon turns gold. Hyeon-seo will settle and Rumi's patterns will disappear and they can both be who they've been trying to be for so long. It'll happen. It has to happen.

    Summary

Being a lifeguard was not the plan. It still isn’t, really.
Or at least, it isn’t the long-term plan.
But uni isn’t free, and neither is food or housing, so since she has to be here anyways for school at JNU, she figured that at least she’d get to enjoy the beaches.
Plus, with the advanced training she had from her time as a lifeguard while she (ironically) floundered at UCSD, she’d been eagerly accepted into the fold of Jeju Island’s less experienced team.
So it’s not so bad, Dumb Boy and his ilk aside.
And she does get tons of time to explore the island and its various tide pools, which is great for her morale and her research on the effects of global warming on the species in said tide pools. And sometimes, she gets to help some baby sea turtles get to the water, which feels like actual magic.
So, overall, not a bad gig.
Especially since the two (very pretty, oh my god) girls she noticed seem to have taken notice of her, eyeing her up from under their umbrella, the taller of the two not particularly seeming to care when Zoey sees.
    ‘Interesting.’

Zoey is a hot lifeguard. Mira and Rumi are hot for the lifeguard.

"heloise-verse" focuses mostly on post-canon! lots of polytrix, the idea of love and how it isn't always what you expect it to be, and how you can write a thousand things down and still be blindsided by emotions you could have never expected

    Bookmarker's Notes

    heloise:
2nd person POV. The OCDness of it all. Raising yourself through books and poems and strangers' words. Having the vocabulary but not the confidence or experience to identify your own relationships with others. Jinu. Jinu. Three taps into verbal assurances into five taps into kissing. Insignificance and yearning and grief and accepting you were wrong about what you don't and do deserve. Love - again, and again, and again.

this is how you lose your best friend:

There’s a world in which she loses them. This isn’t that world; she doesn’t have to keep acting like it is. She isn’t stuck backstage, and she doesn’t feel like she is anymore, not most days. Mira is still scared sometimes. There are days where she can’t entirely believe that Rumi came back, or that Zoey found her again in the crowd. There are days where everything feels impossible—grief, as she’s coming to learn, doesn’t follow a pattern. There doesn’t have to be loss for there to be grief.

    things i never said:

“We both fucked up,” Zoey says, moving her hand down to intertwine her fingers with Mira’s. “Backstage, during that whole...everything. I think we’ve all been really scared,” she murmurs. “I thought it would get better, and, you know. Clearly it didn’t. I’m still scared. But I think I’m less scared now. We don’t have to keep—living there. I don’t want to keep living there. Do you?”
