Summary
Hyunjin always felt. Since a child, he learned how to feel every emotion within him and let it run every part of him. There was something beautiful about it, the ability to love so wholly and feel joy so intensely. It made life colorful, it made his art more passionate, and it made stuff like this feel like death.
In the pit of his stomach, those emotions rotted. They churned and solidified, despair manifesting itself into a small home and stubbornly staying put. Hyunjin felt. Hyunjin felt every bit of anxiety and sadness running through his nerves, he felt the way his heart ached with just the sight of Changbin’s own sadness, the way the feeling of defeat was written so clearly on his face.
The sadness that Hyunjin brought him.
The life that he ripped away from his hands.

He knew he had no right to be this annoyed about it, because he'd done the exact same thing with Chan, after all. Leaned in, let their lips barely touch, heard the fans scream. Done it with zero issue, because it was work, because it was expected, because Chan's face so close to his was familiar and entirely, completely platonic.
He knew that. Logically. Intellectually. In the part of his brain that was a reasonable, well-adjusted adult.
But the other part — the stupid, lizard, possessive part of his meat head — was currently replaying the image of Changbin's mouth so close to Felix's on a loop, and it wanted to bite something.
So he didn't look over. Didn't speak. Just watched the darn water and city lights outside and pretended he was above all of this.
(He was not above any of this.)
After watching each other kiss other members during the fanmeeting pepero game, Hyunjin and Changbin spend the ride home in petty, jealous silence, until they get home and find other ways to communicate.

“Oh my god.” Yongbok reaches over and snatches his phone. “You are not allowed to plan our entire vacation like we’re on schedule.”
“I’m not!” Chan tries to take his phone back but Yongbok hands it over to Hyunjin, who giggles and holds it out and back as far away from Chan as he can. “I promise! I just don’t want—”
“One thing,” Yongbok says, trying to look stern but a smile is trying to steal across his face again. “You’re allowed to book one thing before we even step foot on the plane. Choose wisely.”
“Two.” Chan stands, leaning across the table, reaching for Hyunjin’s hand but it’s still too far away. Hyunjin laughs, quickly switching the phone to his other hand, dropping it in Changbin’s lap. Chan’s fast enough to snatch it back before Changbin really registers it’s there.
“Fine,” Yongbok huffs. “Two. But they have to be at least a week apart.”Series

“No way. You’re lying." Hyunjin laughed as they finished their meal.
“You do." When the check was brought to the table Changbin handed the waitress a credit card. “Usually when things are gross or weird. Your face gets all scrunchy."
“Scrunchy." Hyunjin repeated, deadpan.
“I don’t know how to describe it. It’s super animated, and cute."
“You must pay close attention if you notice things like that."
Changbin shrugged. “I like noticing things about you."
Hyunjin’s gaze lingered, something unreadable behind it. “Most people don’t."
“Well." Voice was low. Even. “I’m not most people."
The space between them grew quiet, yet still comfortable.
Hyunjin looked out the window, watching people walked by. “You’re good at making people feel seen."
Changbin watched for a moment with silent fondness. The way Hyunjin smiled, like it was some sort of secret meant only for the artist himself. The way his shoulders relaxed when he felt safe. “It’s easier when the person’s worth seeing."

Hyunjin and Changbin both feel like third wheels in their own lives. It’s only after meeting each other that they feel truly seen

Summary
His eyes drift to the painting of grapes hanging on the wall beside the fridge. He smiles at the fond memory of how a fan had told Hyunjin that ‘if you put up a picture of grapes in the house, the family will live harmoniously without conflict’ and how he had wasted no time, painting said grapes and immediately hanging it up once it was done.
Changbin could see Hyunjin watching him from the corner of his eye, at how he’s looking between the grape painting and Changbin, most likely thinking the same thing.
They share that same knowing smile. The one that said a million words without saying anything at all.

The world tilts on its axis. The words hang in the air.
A crush. A stupid, tiny little crush.
Or, Hyunjin had spent all of high school drowning in love for Changbin, while Changbin spent it drowning in music; now, eight years after letting his best friend walk away without a word, Hyunjin finds himself sitting across from him and learning that the love he buried alive was never even unrequited.
And all it took them was a stupid coffee shop, approximately one existential crisis each, and a meddling Felix to finally figure it out.

"I don't like it," Hyunjin murmured, lip half-submerged in the water. His hand reached out to encircle his ankle.
"I'm pretty sure they can tell that we belong together."
"It's not clear enough. You don't get it." Hyunjin was pouting again as he lifted himself out of the water. Water rippled down his lithe, muscular body and disappeared in some wine red swim shorts.
He sat down next to him. The water was cool to the touch. "Explain it to me."
"You're too…" Hyunjin turned to him, brows furrowed and wildly gestured vaguely in his direction, "…unmarked!"
"Then mark me, I don't care."
Hyunjin wants to litter Changbin's pretty skin in bites until it's clear he's already been claimed by someone else.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Felix asks quietly, reaching out to hold Hyunjin’s hand.
Hyunjin squeezes Felix’s fingers. “There’s not much to talk about, really.”
“Did they deserve it?”
“I wouldn’t have done it if I felt like they didn’t,” Hyunjin murmurs.
Felix makes an affirmative noise, resting his head on Hyunjin’s shoulder. “Is Changbin safer now?”
“Yes,” Hyunjin lies. “He’s safer.”
Felix wraps himself around Hyunjin’s arm and squeezes. “Then that’s all that matters. As long as Changbin-hyung is safe, there’s nothing for you to worry about.”
Hyunjin doesn’t know if he can viably agree, so he stays quiet and lets himself be held, trying to convince himself that Felix is right. If Hyunjin can try to justify that Changbin is safer because of what he’s done, then it’s fine.
Everything will be fine.

He clung to Chan with trembling fingers and gasped softly into the night, "Promise, hyung, even if you have to take him there yourself, please Chan-ah -"
Chan started to rock, from his awkward position lying down, tangled in strange blankets, and hushed the younger, pressing his lips firmly to the side of Changbin's head.
"Shhhhh ... you're safe, listen, hush, now, little one ... sleep, now, I've got you ... shhh .... shhh ..."
The younger boy shuddered, but gave up without a fight, curling into Chan's chest in a way he hadn't in years, not since they were much smaller and much younger, and drifted closer and closer to sleep.
As Chan also began to drowse off, he heard Changbin whisper, feeling the words tattoo themselves across his collarbones like runes of a terrible fate foretold,
"... he's gotta go home, hyung ..."

In a dark room.
Surrounded by people who may or may not recognise them but that wouldn't matter because he had Changbin sitting right next to him.
Maybe he'd purposefully let his hand linger close to the popcorn bucket that Changbin would insist on paying for and when he senses him moving to grab some, he would accidentally knock his hand against his and Changbin would glance over, ready to mutter a quiet sorry, or even better, giggle and then Hyunjin would giggle too because his tiny, squeaky laugh is infectious and lovely.
Hyunjin invites Changbin out to a movie premiere, despite the anxiety eating away at him.

After being broken up for 3 years, their paths are crossed again when Changbin responds to a call about an apartment that happens to be his old address. Surely Hyunjin has moved since then right?
Fate as it turns out has other plans for the two when they’re reunited again under horrible circumstances.
