    He says it hoping Akechi will rally back with his quick wit, falling in line with the usual showmanship and the camaraderie that’s been missing from this conversation. It’s impossible to ignore how Akechi has arranged the scene to resemble the last time he cornered him with a proposition: with the threat of the public just a few feet away.

    “That’s assuming I will,” Akechi says, still using his honeyed voice as he imparts his words. “Which puts us in a unique position here. What if I were to tell you that I have plans to go back on this alliance of ours, and the only thing that would change my mind is if you abandoned your friends and joined me?”
